Toddler parents are in an exhausting season of life, full of fun, challenge, temper tantrums, laughter and new words and behaviors every day, some that make mom and dad laugh and some that make them pull their hair out. If you are in the toddler stage, here are some top tips to help you navigate the tempestuous twos:
Keep a Routine. Toddlers need predictability: consistent meal times, naps, playtime and bedtime help them feel safe and minimizes meltdowns.
Pick your battles. Not every fight is worth having with your child. Determine what really matters (like safety or kindness) and let the small stuff slide when it’s appropriate.
Stay calm when they are throwing tantrums. This is not always easy, but your calm demeanor helps them learn to regulate their emotions. Recognize their feelings (“I know you are upset”) and give them space when needed.
Foster independence. Encourage them to try new things on their own, even if it’s not done neatly or as fast as you’d like. Allowing them to try small tasks by themselves will build their confidence and skills.
Recognize the good. Catch them in the act of being good. What gets noticed gets repeated. Reinforcing their positive behavior sometimes works better than disciplining the bad.
Use screens thoughftully. A little screen time is okay, but be mindful of appropriate content and watch with them when you can.
Read to them daily. Reading to your kids helps them build language skills, connection and imagination, plus it’s a good way to calm them down at bedtime or naptime.
Childproof your home. Instead of saying NO a hundred times a day (which is more stressful for you), use safety gates, outlet covers, locked cabinets and put away the decorations and figurines that you don’t want them to break.
Gather your village. You are not alone in your parenting challenges. Talk with other parents, mentors and coaches who can offer support, tips and a different perspective.
Care for yourself. Your mental well-being affects your family. Rest when you can, ask for help, and give yourself some grace.
